Topic: Architecting Modern Distributed Applications
Nearly every application we build today has dependencies to other systems. How do we design them to work together to meet our goals? How do we decide what to build and what to buy? Do we host it ourselves or in the cloud? With a bewildering array of choices, the biggest challenge we face today is how to architect robust...
I've got some ideas that I'll hopefully implement on this blog to get you guys more active. To 'keep you one your programming toes'. Starting tomorrow (hopefuly) I'll be starting something called the Thursday Challenge. The Thursday Challenge is basically a simple programming challenge that I'll post a problem and you'll need to code up a solution to the problem. I'll provide a basic application that simply needs code behind for those who don't want to spend the time designing the layout. All...

If you have installed BIDS Helper 1.3 for SQL 2008 in the last few days, you might want to head back to the site and pick up the new 1.3.0.7 build for 2008. There is an issue with one of the assembly references picking up a 9.0 assembly instead of a 10.0 assembly which causes the Variable Window Extensions to throw various error messages. If you are using the SQL 2005 build you will not be affected by this issue...
Recently I have been asked if it was possible to "couple" two services via BizTalk without using orchestrations. Let's look at that required scenario more closely:
1. A request message (ReqA) is received on the WCF-BasicHttp Receive Adapter, and it is posted to the MsgBox.
2. A solicit-response send port is activated due to a subscribtion to ReqA.
3. ReqA is mapped to ReqB.
4. ReqB is sent via the WCF-BasicHttp Send Adapter
5. RespB is received by the WCF-BasicHttp Send Adapter.
6. RespB...
We began our environment synchronization carefully. We carefully examined the differences between the environments, and documented them. We met with all the stakeholders/owner of the environments and everyone had input into how the synch would affect them and their work. We made adjustments to schedule and timeline to accommodate the disparate needs of the people with interests. Everyone nodded their heads in the same places, and rather than face it with fear, everyone seemed to have a calm confidence...

These last months have been amongst the most intensive I have ever been in my life. Since my last blog post, I have been extremely busy finishing writing my Silverlight book and starting the editing work. It is well underway, and we will publish later this year. It is a very exciting time for me to see that book shaping up after almost a year of work on it. Yes I will be happy to see the finished, paper-printed work!!
Another reason why this time of the year has been especially exciting for...
We are currently in Ireland on vacation and at my wife's Podiatrist conference. We left on Wednesday night August 6 @9pm, and arrived in Dublin Thursday morning @9am. Once we got our luggage it was off to get a car. Now, this was a first for me renting a car in Europe. You sit on the opposite side of the car, and you drive on the opposite side of the road, and the car was stick shift to boot. It was really hard getting used to shifting with my left hand. Once we got the car our first destination...
Americal Gangster is an excellent film. My feelings about it are shared by the first imdb commenter, "I can hardly believe that this amazing package of a story was delivered by Ridley Scott". Highly recommended...
Yesterday, Microsoft confirmed they would be lifting the licensing by physical server restriction that made using features such as VMotion & XenMotion an expensive option if Microsoft software was used. I spoke about in a previous post. The license restriction will be lifted on 41 server products, exactly which ones it isn't yet clear.
Also, the EULA isn't available just yet so the exact T&C aren't known, so lets hope there isn't any nasty caveats that spoil this good news.
The news licensing...

Mission: strictly recon.
Debrief:
We met up in downtown Minneapolis, where we hung out for a bit and watched the sun go down. As it started to get dark, the three of us piled into one car and headed to the first of two places we wanted to scope out for further exploration.
Location 1: Flour Mill
Status: Closed, Non-operational
Finding suitable roadside parking, we walked over and checked the place out. We walked around for about half an hour, noting some very interesting features but...

I thought I would post about this because I find myself putting notes about this in comments here and there. One of our team members bought the rabies plush doll from ThinkGeek a little over a month ago. From the site: Most folks never realize how cute microbes can be when expanded 1,000,000 times and then fashioned into cuddly plush. Until now, that is. Keep one on your desktop to remind yourself that there is an "invisible" universe out there filled with very small things that can do incredible...
When trying to install the Adventure Works 2008 sample database on my new SQL Server 2008 instance I very quickly got a message box about the installation failing with an error of 2738. For some reason this sounded familiar and sure enough a quick search turned up this post from Mitch (see: The error code is 2738) where he had the same error (with a different installer). It appears to be the same issue as the same fix worked for me and now I am up and running with the new sample database. Technorati...
http://www.infoq.com/news/2008/08/.NET-3.5-SP1-Runs-Managed-Code In the past, one could not run managed code from network shares due to security reasons. That feature was introduced in .NET from the beginning to prevent security attacks coming from network locations. The feature did not resolve the respective security threats because unmanaged code always was allowed to run in such a circumstance. A pool organized by Brad Adams, Program Manager at Microsoft, shows that many people would...
What do you do?
Many people, particularly men, have their personal identity defined by what they do for a living.
At a recent church picnic, there was the usual small talk, which eventually leads to the question, "What do you do?". And, even though people mean well, they may feel better about you or themselves, or even evaluate you differently, based on your response.
One of the guys was embarassed and avoided the question. Later, he said that he used to have a prominent job with a big office...
So after Chris prodded me and since I’ve been heckling Rob on Twitter, I figured I should finally throw my hat in the ring for this 100 Pushup Challenge that’s become all the rage on Twitter and in the blogosphere. In a nutshell: See how many pushups you can do before you fail. Compare that number with a chart to determine your starting level. Begin doing a 6 week program that aims to get you to 100 pushups within a month and a half. So tonight I hit the gym and tried for my max pushups....
I have been a big fan of Launchy for some time. I find that it helps me be just a tiny bit more productive each day. It at least let's me not have to search through my start menu for the program I want to launch. However, today I found a new alternative provide by Microsoft Office Labs. This application has some real potential to replace Launchy on my laptop. I will continue to use and let everyone know what I find out. Check it out here: http://www.officelabs.com/projects/speedlaunch/Pages/default.aspx...
This threw me for a loop today. You can't call a PowerShell function with commas "," or parentheses "()" and have it believe it goes to both parameters. Try running the following and see what your output is on every line call to "foo." function foo([string]$a, [string]$b) { Write-Host "a:", $a, " b:", $b } foo("A", "B") foo "A", "B" foo "A" "B" foo("A", "B") "C" rm function:/foo You may find you get different results than you may...
You may run into this at some point. TFS Team Build may not deploy some assembly file you needed. If you look through the logs, you will see something like this (cleaned up for readability): C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Vbc.exe /noconfig /optionstrict+ /rootnamespace:Company.Project.Console /doc:obj\Release\Company.Project.Console.xml /define:"CONFIG=\"Release\",TRACE=-1,_MyType=\"Console\",PLATFORM=\"AnyCPU\"" /reference:..\libs\Castle\Castle.Core.dll,...
I've posted several new ReSharper tips of the Day to to Fooberry.com. One of the most interesting ones in my opinion is the ability for ReSharper to generate the overriden Equals method. Read more here at Fooberry.com...
Since November 2007, I'm a coach in a .net project. This project is managed using the SCRUM principles. I was largely based in the InfoQ online minibook 'Scrum and XP from the trenches': Prioritized product backlog, sprint planning, sprint backlog, daily scrums, sprint demos and retrospectives at the end of every sprint, ...
This was combined with XP: Pair programming, TDD, incremental design, CI, collective code ownership (well ... almost), ...
This project was a really fun project. Off the top...
I had trouble with someone's Silverlight site... I dropped my buddy Tim Heuer an email and asked him if it was me or what... he said it was me... sigh...
I still disagree, but as this progressed, Tim offered up that there is a problem folks are reporting that I appeared to be on the edge of... so I figured what the heck, let's help!
After an email exchange last night, we realized I needed .NET 3.5 SP1 installed.. oops... so I tried that and it pooted...hmmm
Tim says "Oh if you have VS2008 on there,...

I haven't been to a PDC since 1997. The big announcement that year was 'ActiveX'. It was a great event and I have high hopes for this years event as well.
This year the topic seems to be 'cloud computing'. I'm going to enjoy steeping myself into this technology. I just found out that Don Box is now going to be part of the keynote as well. It's sure to be a great time and there'll be more reports here...
